Joint Conference on Waters of Afghanistan and e-Governance (2019)
On April 27, 2019, the Society of Afghan Engineers and the Afghan Academy of Northern Virginia hosted a pivotal conference in Alexandria, VA, titled “Waters of Afghanistan and e-Governance.” Experts Eng. Mohammad Hashim Rayek and Mr. Farid Abass delivered insightful presentations on Afghanistan’s water resources and the transformative potential of electronic governance.
Background
On Saturday, April 27, 2019, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, the Society of Afghan Engineers (SAE), in a joint effort with the Afghan Academy of Northern Virginia, sponsored and hosted a technical conference titled “Waters of Afghanistan and e-Governance” in Alexandria, Virginia. We facilitated this event by bringing together our expert members, Eng. Mohammad Hashim Rayek and Mr. Farid Abass, to deliver highly informative presentations to the audience on the critical topics of national water resources and the implementation of electronic governance in Afghanistan.
Our Role in Organizing the Conference
Following the success of our 2019 Annual Conference, we partnered with the Afghan Academy to sponsor and host this subsequent event. Our objective was to provide a platform to share professional knowledge and technical expertise regarding two vital areas of Afghanistan’s infrastructure and administrative development: managing the nation’s water bodies and modernizing government operations through electronic governance.

Waters of Afghanistan
Eng. Mohammad Hashim Rayek, a founding member and former president of our Society, delivered an in-depth presentation on the waters of Afghanistan. Drawing on his extensive hands-on knowledge of the subject, he discussed the capacity of the country’s water bodies, noting that Afghanistan holds a total volume of 75 billion cubic meters of annual renewable water, which consists of approximately 57 billion cubic meters of surface water and 18 billion cubic meters of subterranean water. We published the highlights of his presentation in our July 2019 eNewsletter to ensure this critical information reached our broader membership.
e-Governance and Its Advantages
Mr. Farid Abass, who was serving as a current member of our Board of Directors, shared his professional expertise on Electronic Governance. His presentation focused on the implementation of electronic governance and detailed the specific advantages that such a digital infrastructure would provide to both the people and the government of Afghanistan.
