The Ashraf Roshan Scholarship for Architecture Education

Established in memory of a distinguished Afghan architect and founding member of our Society, the Ashraf Roshan Scholarship for Architecture Education provides financial assistance and academic grants to outstanding architecture and design students at Kabul University to further elevate the architectural profession in Afghanistan to national and international standards.

Honoring a Legacy

At the Society of Afghan Engineers (SAE), we are profoundly honored to offer the Ashraf Roshan Scholarship to students pursuing undergraduate education in architecture in Afghanistan.

Mr. Ashraf Roshan graduated from the Architecture Department of the Faculty of Engineering at Kabul University in 1980. He was a distinguished Afghan architect, a founding member of our Society, and served with dedication as our Treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors. After immigrating to the United States, he founded the AR Architectural Group in Chester, Maryland, where he led a highly successful career.

His deep love for his architecture school and his passion for the professional development of his motherland youths accompanied him to the end of his life until his untimely passing from cancer. To keep his legacy alive and honor his dedication to SAE, his wife, Mrs. Tooba Roshan, and her family generously established this scholarship fund.

Objective and Beneficiaries

The primary objective in offering this scholarship is to further architecture education and architecture design in Afghan universities, ensuring it aligns with accepted national and international standards.

The primary beneficiaries of this program are students enrolled at the Department of Architecture of the Faculty of Engineering at Kabul University. Every year, we aim to award up to a total of six academic grants. Each successful candidate may receive a one-time cash or in-kind academic award of US $1,000.

Candidate Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the Ashraf Roshan Scholarship, a candidate must meet each the following qualifications:

  • Enrollment Status: Applicant must be enrolled as a full-time student.
  • Academic Level: Applicant must be in the 3rd or 4th or 5th year of the undergraduate architecture program.
  • Educational Performance: Applicant must demonstrate outstanding academic performance by holding the highest average grade across all courses in the year of study and/or the year before.

Award Types

  • Leadership and Excellence Award: Given to students who show outstanding motivation and scholastic ability, established through strong leadership qualities and exceptional academic performance, including the highest grade point average.
  • Architectural Portfolio Award: Given to students based on professional performance in specific assignments as determined by SAE-designated team.
  • Research in Heritage Architecture: Given to students interested in initiating and conducting research related to Afghanistan’s architectural heritage.

Award Categories

The above award types may be rendered in one of the following three forms:

Category I – Cash Prize

This category provides cash award and is directly paid to the awardee. This Category is reserved exclusively for the fifth-year architecture students.

Category II – Architectural/Educational Supplies and Aids

This Category provides essential in-kind technical supply/material to aid the awardee with coursework assignments and design projects.

Category III – Research, Travel

This Category is specifically for students interested in research work, and provides reimbursable expenses incurred by the student undertaking the research, and is directly payable to the awardee. It is intended to support compelling, goal-oriented activities that add higher purpose and value to the applicant’s education and career goals. Such activities may include studying the Afghan built environment, organizing or attending lectures, designing art exhibits, and supporting educational workshops.

Applicants for Category III must submit a formal proposal in the form of a 400-word essay that clearly outlines their proposal goals, the amount of funds required, and the timelines for completion. Additionally, the applicant must provide two letters of recommendation from program mentors in support of the proposal.
