Between August and November 2012, the Society of Afghan Engineers and partners conducted an 11-week workshop in Kabul, training over 30 professionals on the 2006 International Building Code (IBC) to ensure safer construction practices. Our initiative to strengthen Afghanistan's infrastructure focuses on empowering local engineers through specialized training in Quality Control and Quality Assurance. In partnership with the Ministry of Energy and Water, we successfully trained 33 professionals in advanced construction methodologies, ensuring a lasting impact on the country’s irrigation systems and beyond.

The Society of Afghan Engineers, led by Eng. Amanullah Mommandi, provided crucial training on avalanche control and rockfall mitigation to Afghanistan's Ministry of Public Works in 2012. This initiative aimed to enhance safety on the perilous Salang Pass, introducing formal avalanche control measures for the first time in the country’s history.

On April 27, 2019, the Society of Afghan Engineers and the Afghan Academy of Northern Virginia hosted a pivotal conference in Alexandria, VA, titled "Waters of Afghanistan and e-Governance." On May 2, 2014, a catastrophic landslide devastated Aab Bareek village in Badakhshan, claiming lives and displacing hundreds. In response, we raised over $18,600 for relief efforts, ensuring immediate aid and later repurposing funds to support 400 vulnerable families during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In response to the COVID-19 crisis, we partnered with the Society of Afghan Architects and Engineers to distribute essential food supplies to vulnerable families in Kabul. Through two phases of relief efforts, over 517 families received vital support, ensuring their survival during these challenging times.

In response to the escalating crisis in Afghanistan, our fundraising campaign raised $10,100 to support internally displaced families. Collaborating with Afghan Relief in Kabul and the Selab Charity Foundation in Kandahar, we provided essential supplies to over 230 families in urgent need.

On June 22, 2022, a devastating 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan, claiming over 1,000 lives and damaging thousands of homes. In response, the Society of Afghan Engineers mobilized financial aid, conducted damage assessments, and provided educational outreach to bolster community resilience and recovery efforts.

In May 2024, devastating floods struck north-western Afghanistan, severely impacting Baghlan, Ghor, Logar, and Faryab. The Society of Afghan Engineers responded with a $1,500 donation and individual contributions to aid recovery efforts. Join us in supporting future relief campaigns—donate today!

In September 2025, a devastating earthquake rocked eastern Afghanistan, claiming over 2,500 lives and displacing thousands. In response, Engineer Amin Mahmood spearheaded an initiative to construct 15 emergency shelters for affected families in Kunar Province, raising over $16,000 through community support and personal contributions.

In July 2025, over a million Afghan refugees faced forced returns to Afghanistan, enduring inhumane treatment. The Society of Afghan Engineers stepped up, providing emergency aid in partnership with the Afghanistan Relief Alliance, fulfilling our moral obligation to support those in need.

Our members played a pivotal role in enhancing Afghanistan's transportation infrastructure by providing essential geotechnical data for the Kabul overpass project in 2011. Spearheaded by Engineer Sahib Najib Poya and supported by ASR Engineering, Inc., led by Dr. A. Saboor Rahim, this collaboration ensured the project's success and safety.

Since our inception, we’ve played a pivotal role in Afghanistan's technical development, from emergency repairs of the Salang Tunnel to sustainable housing designs in Bamiyan. In 2002, a dedicated team from our Board conducted a crucial fact-finding mission in Afghanistan's Helmand Valley to assess infrastructure damage. Their findings highlighted urgent repairs needed for irrigation systems, leading to a comprehensive technical report aimed at aiding the region's reconstruction efforts.

Our team provided urgent peer review for Afghanistan's housing standards, identifying key deficiencies and offering vital recommendations to enhance clarity and practicality. We emphasized the need for accessible language, cultural sensitivity, and user feedback to ensure the standards are effective and enforceable.
