Sustainable Development Initiatives at SAE Annual Conferences (2017 & 2019)

Executive Summary of Our Collaborative Forums

The Society of Afghan Engineers (SAE), alongside Afghan embassy representatives, USAID officials, and engineering subject matter experts, have hosted major Annual Conferences dedicated to “Afghanistan Sustainable Development” and “Sustainable Land Development in Afghanistan”. These pivotal events took place at the Dunya Banquet Hall in Alexandria, Virginia, specifically on October 14, 2017, and January 19, 2019. We organized technical presentations, keynote speeches, and panel discussions to identify current infrastructural challenges and propose practical, sustainable solutions to guide Afghanistan’s future development policies.

The 2017 Annual Conference: Afghanistan Sustainable Development

On October 14, 2017, we hosted our Annual Conference under the theme “Afghanistan Sustainable Development”. The primary objective of this gathering was to initiate discussions regarding the existing problems experienced within Afghanistan’s development sectors and to formulate implementable, sustainable solutions for the country. The conference was well-attended, featuring approximately 60 participants, including representatives from the Afghan Embassy in Washington and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Our expert speakers delivered papers on a variety of critical topics directly tied to sustainable development. For example, our presentations covered the use of remote sensing and GIS for groundwater exploration, urban flooding and flood control solutions, historical building restoration, and an overarching assessment of the Afghan environment from an engineering perspective. Furthermore, a dedicated panel discussed the urban development process, comparing local Afghan practices with global standards. Through these deliberations, we highlighted the vital necessity of considering long-term sustainability and durability during the design and construction phases of all infrastructure projects.

The 2019 Annual Conference: Sustainable Land Development in Afghanistan

Building upon our prior work, we convened the 2019 Annual Conference on January 19, 2019, focusing specifically on “Sustainable Land Development in Afghanistan”. The core goal of this conference was to provide a forum for our members to share their knowledge of sustainable land development practices in the United States and to identify corresponding deficiencies within Afghanistan’s current practices.

Our highly qualified subject matter experts, possessing years of practical experience, led sessions divided into “Sustainable Urban Development” and “Sustainable Land Development”. The detailed presentations tackled complex, on-the-ground issues such as unregulated development, accessibility challenges for disabled Afghans, urban storm drainage design, sustainable urban transportation, and the establishment of dedicated urban development authorities.

Through these discussions, we aimed to address the negative economic and environmental impacts posed by massive, unregulated land development, emphasizing the need for standardized policies, transparent legal processes, and the equal application of the law. Our ultimate hope is that the insights and practical suggestions generated from this conference will serve as a useful resource for Afghanistan’s technical ministries in formulating better, more sustainable land development policies for future generations.
