Tooba Roshan

Within our Society, Architect Tooba Roshan has been a highly active and dedicated member, currently serving as the Vice President on the SAE Executive Committee. Her nomination for this role was unanimously approved by our Board of Directors in January 2024.

Beyond her leadership duties, she and her family established the SAE-Ashraf Roshan Scholarship for Architecture Education in memory of her late husband, who was a founding member and former Treasurer of our organization. This scholarship provides crucial financial assistance and academic grants to architecture and design students enrolled in Afghan universities to promote educational excellence.

In addition, Architect Roshan actively volunteers as a faculty member with the Afghan Architecture Studio (AAS). Through this initiative, we provide online architecture and urban design studio classes to students in Afghanistan, notably supporting female students whose access to formal university education has been restricted. Her contributions as a mentor, leader, and educator continue to make a lasting impact on our professional community and the next generation of Afghan architects.

Early Life and Education

Tooba Roshan completed her high school education at Zarghoona High School in Kabul, Afghanistan. Following her graduation, she enrolled in the Department of Architecture at the Faculty of Engineering at Kabul University in 1979. After spending the first twenty years of her life in Kabul, she relocated to the United States in 1983.

Raised by academic parents, education has always held significant value for her. Upon arriving in the U.S., she balanced her professional ambitions with her educational goals, attending community college on a part-time basis while concurrently growing her business. She earned an Associate’s degree from Anne Arundel Community College in 2002, and subsequently received her Bachelor’s degree in architecture and interior design from Howard University in 2009, where she graduated summa cum laude and was named to the Dean’s List. In 2017, she commenced graduate studies at the Saint John School of Liberal Arts, though she later stepped away from the program to care for her family.

Professional Career

Architect Roshan’s early career in the United States involved working with various remodeling and new construction builders. In 1994, she and her late husband, Mohammad Ashraf Roshan, began working from their home, which laid the foundation for their future enterprise. By 2000, they officially founded the AR Architecture Group, providing architectural services across Maryland and Virginia. The firm expanded in 2015 to include design-build services with the addition of the TR Construction Group.

Following the passing of her husband and business partner in October 2017, she took on dual duties in architecture and construction to continue his legacy. Today, she serves as the Principal Designer at the AR Architecture – TR Construction Group. Under her leadership, the firm designs and builds custom homes, restaurants, shopping centers, and assisted living facilities, with the majority of projects located in Bethesda, Davidsonville, Baltimore, and Stafford. Her professional specialties encompass AutoCAD, space planning, and construction project management.
