Honoring a Legacy
At the Society of Afghan Engineers (SAE), we are profoundly honored to offer the Ashraf Roshan Scholarship for Architecture Education. Mr. Ashraf Roshan graduated from the Architecture Department of the Faculty of Engineering at Kabul University in 1980. He was a distinguished Afghan architect, a founding member of our Society, and served dedicatedly as our Treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors. After immigrating to the United States, he founded the AR Architectural Group in Chester, Maryland, where he led a highly successful career.
His deep love for his architecture school and his passion for the profession accompanied him throughout his life until his untimely passing from cancer. To keep his legacy alive and honor his dedication to SAE, his wife, Mrs. Tooba Roshan, and her family generously established this scholarship fund.
Our Objective and Beneficiaries
Our primary objective in offering this scholarship is to further the education of architecture and design in Afghan universities, ensuring it aligns with accepted national and international standards.
The primary beneficiaries of this program are students enrolled at the Department of Architecture of the Faculty of Engineering at Kabul University. Every year, we aim to award up to a total of six academic grants, which are thoughtfully allocated as three for female students and three for male students. Each successful candidate may receive a one-time cash or in-kind academic grant of US $1,000.
Candidate Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for the SAE-Ashraf Roshan Scholarship, candidates must meet the following qualifications:
- Enrollment Status: Applicants must be active, full-time students.
- Academic Level: Students must be in their 3rd, 4th, or 5th year of an undergraduate or graduate architecture program.
- Academic Excellence: Candidates must demonstrate outstanding academic excellence, which includes holding the highest average grade across all subjects, and must successfully submit a project that meets the specific requirements for the academic grant.
Types of Awards
We have structured the scholarship into several distinct award types to recognize different facets of architectural excellence and dedication:
- Leadership and Excellence Award: Given to students who show outstanding motivation and scholastic ability, established through strong leadership qualities and exceptional academic performance, including the highest grade point average.
- Best Architectural Portfolio Award: Presented to qualifying students based on their academic performance as determined by our specific evaluation criteria.
- Research in Heritage Architecture or Vernacular Architecture Studies: Intended to support specialized research, which may require formal proposal approval by our selection board.
Categories of Academic Grants
Depending on the student’s year of study and specific needs, the academic grants are distributed across three categories:
Category I – Direct Prize
This award is provided in cash and is payable directly to the awardee. This category is reserved exclusively for fifth-year architecture students.
Category II – Architectural Supplies and Computer
This grant provides essential in-kind technical support to assist students with their coursework and design projects.
Category III – Research, Travel, and Extracurricular Activities
Designed specifically for third-year students, this award takes the form of reimbursable expenses directly payable to the awardee. It is intended to support compelling, goal-oriented activities that add higher purpose and value to the applicant’s education and career goals. Such activities may include studying the Afghan built environment, organizing or attending lectures, designing art exhibits, and supporting educational workshops.
Applicants for Category III must submit a formal application in the form of a 400-word essay that clearly outlines their proposal goals, the amount of funds required, and the timelines for completion. Additionally, applicants must provide two letters of recommendation from program mentors in support of their proposal. We evaluate these applications based on the quality of the essay and how well the applicant aligns with the donor’s requisite criteria.
